Roof Damage and Roof Restoration After Kansas City Hail Storms

Roof damage can happen after all types of weather, but the spring storms that have been occurring here in the Midwest recently can greatly impact the integrity of your roof. With strong wind storms and tornadoes, roof damage is a strong possibility.

When upward air currents during a thunderstorm carry raindrops into the upper-level clouds where temperatures are below freezing, small particles of ice form around some type of nuclei, such as an ice crystal or a tiny dust particle, and becomes a frozen mass called hail. The hail progresses through a series of getting caught in updrafts, picking up moisture from rain and water vapor, growing larger until it succumbs to the force of gravity and falls to the ground. Hail can grow to a very large size and weight, enough to cause serious roof damage.

Although roofs are durable and can withstand a typical wind or hail storm, few can avoid damage by a tornado. High-pressure winds along the perimeter of the roof will have a much greater impact on other areas of the roof. Shingles, as well as most other types of roofing, can be loosened by the strong winds and ripped off completely. If your yard is littered with shingles following the storm, then it’s obvious you’ve sustained serious roof damage, but in other cases, it may not be so obvious. Depending on the severity of the storm, you may not be able to see the amount of roof damage from standing on the ground, but you can inspect the exterior of the home for dented gutters, siding and window casings looking for any signs of impact. The exposed fascia on the eaves may also indicate roof damage, and the HVAC system will also show dints and dings from hail.

Roof repairs following a storm may require professional help. Depending on the level of roof damage, it may only take a few days to make the repairs but in some cases could take up to a week.
