Roof Damage From Downed Trees

Roof damage from downed trees following spring storms is not an uncommon occurrence in the Kansas City area. When a tree falls on your house during a storm, there are a number of factors that will play a role in determining the extent of roof damage that your home has experienced. You will need the help of a professional roofing contractor to assess the damage, but there are other immediate issues that you must address first.

AAS Restorarion roof damage storm damage downed treesAfter a tree has come crashing down on your home, the first thing you must do is to evacuate immediately. If you are on a second level, then move to the lower level as soon as possible. If your doorway is blocked then go out through a window. If others are in the home with you, do as much as you can to ensure that they are all accounted for and unharmed, and help get everyone moved to a safer place. If you are unable to safely evacuate, call emergency services for help.

Fallen tree limbs on the roof can expose the interior of your home to rain, wind and other weather extremes. After the storm has passed and it’s safe to return to your home, take the necessary steps to protect your home by covering furniture and anything else that could be damaged with plastic tarps. You should only enter the home if there is no danger from falling debris, exposed electrical wires or unstable flooring. Lock the doors and windows and secure any valuables. Don’t attempt to deal with the roof damage yourself, call a tree removal company. They offer a full range of services for roof damage including tree removal, and debris disposal.

A roofing repair service should be contacted to repair the roof damage once the tree has been removed. The roofing contractor will assess the roof damage and begin making temporary repairs first by placing tarps over holes and exposed areas, and reinforcing any areas where there is structural damage. Based on the assessment, extensive repairs may be required, or a complete  new roof could be necessary.
