Hail Damage To Your Roof – What To Look For

Hail damage to your roof may not be obvious at first glance but after a Kansas City hail storm passes through, it’s a good idea for homeowners to inspect their roof for hail damage right away.AAS-Restoration-and-Roofing-hail-damage-roof-how-to-identify-hail-damage
As soon as it’s safe you need to get outside and take pictures. Before climbing onto the roof, inspect all around your property for damage to other structures, such as the gutters, the downspouts, and the mailbox — if these are dented or damaged your roof probably has hail damage, as well. Missing shingles is the most obvious sign that there is damage to your roof and are a red flag for roof damage.
Get up on the roof for closer inspection and take pictures of the damage. If you are unable to do this yourself you should call a reliable roofing restoration service right away. AAS Restoration and Roofing is just a phone call away. Our crew of experienced roofers and hail damage specialists can come out and conduct a thorough inspection of your property for hail damage and advise you on your options.
Following a hail storm, you need to know what signs to look for to see if your roof was damaged. This is important when you need to have repairs made or file a claim with your insurance company. Some types of roof damage are not covered by homeowner’s insurance, but hail damage usually is covered. However, most insurance companies require a professional inspection for hail damage.
Signs to look for that indicate there is hail damage to your roof:
Damaged Metal
Inspect the metal parts of the roof – downspouts, gutters and flashing. They may be dented, twisted or lifted and falling off. You should also check the valleys and vents on the roof. Soft metal will dent when hit by hail and the size and depth of the dents can indicate how large the hail was. Over time the dents and dings from hail damage can cause water to pool on the roof or lead to weak spots that can crack or break. If you find dents in the metal, it’s likely you will also find hail damage to the rest of the roof.
Gutters
Severe bruising of asphalt shingles can result in granule loss. Look for granules from the shingles inside the eave troughs and on the ground around the foundation of your home. Loose granules can fall into the gutters causing them to clog up. This can also lead to soft shingles and exposure of the asphalt underneath. The effects of the sun and future storms can lead to further damage if not repaired. This is why it’s so important to get a complete inspection of your roof and gutter system after a hailstorm.
Siding
Inspect the home’s siding for paint chips, dents, holes or cracks. If the siding shows damage, chances are there is also damage to the roof. In some more extreme cases the home’s windows and trim can sustain hail damage.
Shingles
Hail damage to shingles is not always apparent. On a roof with asphalt composition shingles, look at the areas of impact for shingle bruising. These will be black in color and soft to the touch. This slight bruising can weaken the shingles and over time water begins to leak in. To spot hail damage to wood shingles, look for brown or orange splits in the wood with sharp edges that have minimal to no deterioration. This indicates recent damage and not something that has been there for any sustained period of time.
Unfortunately, hail damage to a roof cannot be prevented, but you can ensure that your home and roof are fully and professionally repaired after a large hail storm comes into town. Living in the Midwest, specifically the Kansas City area, the chances your roof will receive hail damage at some point is high. Your roof is one of the most important areas to inspect after a storm. When a severe storm with high winds and hail comes through, don’t delay in calling for professional help.
