Hail Damage To Your Roof Can Lead To Water Damage

Here in the Midwest we often see severe storms with heavy rains, lightning, and hail. Hail damage can lead to significant leaks resulting in water damage.

Signs of Hail DamageAAS-Hail-Damage-Water-Damage-Kansas-City

Some signs of hail damage are more obvious than others. Begin by looking for dents in windows, screens, doors, your car and outdoor furniture. Check gutters and downspouts, fascia and siding. If you see dents and dings, there is likely damage to the roof as well.

Damaged Shingles

Hail damage on a roof often causes damage to the shingles. Whether you have asphalt shingles, wood shingles or some other type of roofing, when large frozen balls of ice crash down onto the roof it has the potential of creating holes that cause leaks. Water damage from a leaky roof due to hail damage can be costly and needs repair or restoration as soon as possible.

When a storm is forecast, take a quick look around to see if there is any obvious roof damage, such as missing shingles. After the storm, inspect your roof again. If you are unable to perform a thorough inspection, call a professional roofing company to assess possible roof damage.

A less obvious type of hail damage can occur when hail causes shingles to lose some or all of the granules. The most common type of roofing is asphalt shingles. These are covered in a layer of granules that protect the underlying material from exposure to UV rays and damage over time. Check the gutters and areas around the house for granules that have washed off. When granules are missing, it often leads to premature decay of the shingles.

Damaged Flashing

Significant hail storms with large hail can result in damage to the metal flashing around all the soffits, vents, chimneys and skylights. Hail can leave the flashing dented and can open areas where rain can seep through and cause water damage.

Water Damage From Leaky Roof

Even if a hail storm only lasts for a few minutes, it can still cause serious damage to your roof. Don’t hesitate to have your roof inspected as soon as possible. Although you may not see a lot of obvious damage, it can still be there. A professional inspection can soon determine if there is underlying damage that could grow more severe over time.

Even a small roof leak is critical and can lead to safety and even health risks. Water will eventually leak down into the attic and ultimately all the way down to the foundation of your home. This can lead to costly water damage repairs, some of which are:

  • Attic and Ceiling
  • Besides the obvious damage to things stored in the attic, the interior ceiling and walls are affected. Paint will darken as moisture soaks in, and the ceiling may bubble and expand. In addition, electrical wiring can be compromised.
  • Mold and Mildew
  • A very serious consequence of a leaky roof is black mold, which can spread throughout the entire home to the HVAC system, through the vents, attacking wood framing, ceiling tiles, walls, and floor coverings. Mold and mildew can lead to health issues, such as nasal congestion, rhinitis, inflammation, and asthma. The mold spores continue to reproduce and can lead to allergic reactions, asthmatic symptoms, and more serious health problems. An additional concern is the risk of a fire due to wiring that has come in contact with the water.
